Ever since the citizens of North Carolina took to the polls to vote this past Tuesday, several people have asked me what I thought about “gay marriage.” Rather than answer the same questions over and over again, I thought I would just write my answer down here and direct any questions to this post. Please do me the courtesy of reading all the way to the end before passing judgement on my point of view.

“What do you think about gay marriage?” I cannot tell you how many times I have heard that question this week. No matter what answer I give, somebody is going to be mad at me, so I just decided to tell the truth and have a little fun with it. Here’s a composite of several recent conversations.

A friend usually comes up and makes a comment about the vote in North Carolina and asks my opinion on “gay marriage.”

Invariably, I respond that there is no such thing as a gay marriage…at least not all the time. Trust me. My lovely bride and I have been wed for over twenty-five years. In that time, we’ve had our gay and happy moments – times when life is good and we’re all laughing and giggly. Everybody has those moments, but they don’t go on 24/7. Life is hard at times and you have periods of anger, sadness, grief, depression, stress and nearly every other emotion.

So, having said that, I don’t believe that there is any such thing as a marriage that is gay all the time!

At this point, the questioning friend gets an exasperated look on his/her face and tries to correct me by saying something like, “You know fully well that I’m talking about same sex marriage! Do you believe in same sex marriage?”

To that I reply, “Oh, now I see. Of course I believe in same sex marriage. I have to. After all, my wife and I have been having pretty much the same sex for the last two and a half decades.”

About now is when I notice my friend’s face start to turn red; they’re either getting angry or trying hard not to laugh. I can’t be sure. Being that I have some very persistent friends, they try again. ”No! No! No! I mean a marriage between two men or between two women. What do you think about that?”

“Oh. You’re talking about a same-gender marriage, right?”

“Yes!” they exclaim.

“Well, I have my own personal beliefs on the subject, but I don’t care to offer an opinion on it. Here’s why…” At this point, I tell them what I’m going to share with you below.

THE REAL ANSWER

I believe that marriage is a spiritual and sanctified union. I believe that it was instituted by God in the beginning of human existence. Since God defined marriage, only God can truly define what does and does not constitute a marriage. The states can’t. The president can’t. Even the Supreme Court of the United States is ultimately powerless to alter God’s definition of marriage.

Having said that, I strongly believe that states are free to create whatever kind of unions they see fit and are free to call them whatever they like. If they want to create a union between two men or two women and call it a marriage, so be it. What they call it doesn’t really matter. If they want to create the same union and call it a bookshelf, that’s okay too.

So, let the states create whatever unions they want and let God decide if those unions (either heterosexual or homosexual) are real, godly marriages. That last point is not for me to judge.

THIS IS IMPORTANT!

As a Christian, I know, with all of my heart, that there will come a day of judgement. I also know that there is eternal life for all -some in glory and some in eternal darkness. I have a strong, deep love in my heart for everyone and I don’t want to see anyone lost. The thought of even one person being lost for eternity really does break my heart.

I don’t want anything I’ve said or written to give anyone false hope or bring unwarranted condemnation. I don’t want to ever be a stumbling block that keeps someone from coming to the Lord and I don’t want to ever give someone false hope that they are on solid spiritual footing, when they are not. Either of those outcomes would be horrible.

Having said that, I will ask you to read the Bible and compare your life to the teachings. I don’t care if you’re homosexual or heterosexual and I don’t care whether you’re Christian or not. Please read God’s word, learn what our Heavenly Father wants and expects and make up your own mind whether you’re living in accordance to God’s word. By doing this, you can determine your own eternal destiny and, on that day of judgement, you will understand and will not be able to say, “I didn’t know.”

Folks, this article is written in love. God loves you and so do I. Be good to each other. God bless.

Sometimes, the simplest things can cause a tremendous reaction. Take tonight’s meal for example. It was just a simple hamburger from a fast-food joint, but it was as good as Ambrosia to me.

You see, I’ve been “under the weather” for the past few days and haven’t eaten much; I just haven’t been hungry. That changed today when my appetite started to come back. Unfortunately, today was also the day when my wife is on a “clear liquids” diet for a procedure she has coming up in the morning. Being a good husband, I didn’t want to eat in front of her because that would just be mean.

As the day wore on, my hunger started to grow. Cindy kept insisting that our son and I go out and get something to eat, but we refused. Finally, we gave in and headed out to the local BK.

Once there, we ordered and waited for our food. Let me tell you that these folks were not living up to the “fast food” moniker. I was starting to get antsy; not to the point of causing a scene, but I was starting to eat ketchup by itself.

Finally, the food arrived and I tore into it as though I had never eaten before. It was unusually good. Really, it was great! I thoroughly enjoyed every bite.

Now, my appetite wasn’t quite up to normal because I didn’t eat as much as I normally would, but I was satisfied.

You’re probably thinking, “Tim, did you just write a blog post about a hamburger?” Well, I guess I did, sort of. The actual point of the post is to act as a reminder to be thankful for the small things in life (like a hamburger) because they can sure become important when you don’t get them for awhile.

Cheers.

Well, there are several differences. Some of the most basic are:

Point of view: Blogs are usually written in the first-person POV, while online magazines are authored from an objective, third-person perspective.

Number of writers: Blogs can have guest posts from time-to-time, but most of the content is created by the site owner or blogger. Online magazines, on the other hand, often have many different writers who regularly contribute.

Branding: Blogs are typically branded after the owner (such as RosalindGardner.com), while the publication name is more important in an online magazine (such as ESBJournal.com). Of course there are some sites that muddy the waters a bit and do so with great success (Such as ClickNewz.com).

Of course, there are many other differences too, but these are a few that I’m dealing with at the moment… among other things.

Right now, I’m working on assembling a roster of top-notch home-based business authorities to share their wisdom. Additionally, I’m working on a new header graphic and changes that will make the site less “Tim-centric.” (Yes, I just coined a new phrase. That’s the way I roll.)

I hope you’ll check out the site as we go through the changes and let me know what you think. I value your feedback.

There’s just something so very nice about a day off in the middle of the week. It feels like Saturday, but Saturday is still to come. It doesn’t feel like a week day. It’s nice.

My wife and I both have Thursday and Friday off for the Thanksgiving holiday. Since we also had some personal business to attend to, we opted to take today as well and extend the already long weekend. It’s nice. Yes, I know I’ve already used that descriptive phrase, but it really is…nice.

Tomorrow will be a little strange around here. Since our son has to work tomorrow, we celebrated Thanksgiving this past Sunday. That means no cooking a big meal around our house tomorrow. We still have plenty of leftovers. One tradition will remain intact however. I will be glued to the TV at 9:00 watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I’ve never missed one and I don’t intend to start now. How about you; will you be watching?

I’m working on a special Thanksgiving post that I plan to publish tonight or tomorrow morning.

In case I get sidetracked or oversleep, I’ll take a moment to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.

God bless,

This morning, as Cindy and I were out doing our errands, we had the rare chance to see a steam-powered piece of rolling history, namely Union Pacific Railroads last steam engine – no. 844.

The engine, originally built in 1944 and returned to service in 2005, is taking part of a Union Pacific centennial celebration tour of New Mexico and Arizona.

As we were driving this morning, we wondered why there were lots of cars parked by the railroad tracks and people standing everywhere. Soon, our questions were answered. Just a few moments after we crossed the tracks, ol’ 844 came rumbling through. For a mile or two, we were actually traveling parallel to this iconic train. It was quite a sight.

Sometimes it’s nice to get a little (steam) blast from the past.

God bless,

Although I am not a veteran myself, I have a great deal of respect and affection for those who are and I don’t think they get nearly the amount of respect and praise they deserve.

I am so very proud that many of my family members and friends have served their country. To them, and all veterans, I say, “Thank you for your service to our country.”

Cindy and I had a great time this morning. We have a tradition of taking bagels and doughnuts into work and inviting the veterans in our office to have breakfast with us. It’s not a huge gesture, but it’s nice and it’s what we can do. Everyone seems to enjoy and appreciate it. I can’t wait to do it again next year.

We should honor our veterans every day, but let’s make a special point to do so today.

There are those who say that today is a lucky day, so maybe we should buy a lottery ticket.

Whatever we decide to do, let’s make sure to make the most of this wonderful day.

God bless,

Welcome to the brand new TimHicks.net website. I know that I have several other blog sites already, but this one is different. While my other sites are about various topics; such as home-based business, self-help and Christmas; this site is about me and my thoughts on various topics. In short, this is my personal blog.

Here, I will write about life, my business interests, thoughts on current events, pro wrestling war stories and pretty much anything else that pops into my head.

I’m not sure why anyone else would ever want to read this site, but I know why I’m writing it. It’s very cathartic and this is much cheaper than therapy.

I hope you enjoy the site and visit from time-to-time. Feel free to share any posts you like and respond to any of the ones that you wish to.

God bless.
